Kinesiology and Health Science Building - HPER

The Kinesiology and Health Science (KHS) Department at Utah State is committed to educating and serving students and members of both local and extended communities in the fields of kinesiology, health science, and recreation administration. Our department works toward this goal as we prepare students for careers in their fields through both our undergraduate and graduate programs.

Within our department, there are four main classifications of our programs:

Kinesiology

Kinesiology is the study of the mechanics of body movement. Students studying disciplines in this area are able to pursue careers in exercise science, physical therapy, or physical education.

Students studying on campus

Under the direction of nationally recognized faculty, students are able to participate in innovative research methods and internships across the disciplines of study. The KHS department works to develop connections and relationships with the community through our programs to help improve the required internship experience of students. The department produces cutting-edge research in eight well-equipped laboratories to advance the understanding of human movement and motor behavior during physical activity.

Explore Our Research

BIOMECHANICS

Focused on relationships between anatomical structures, mechanics, and injuries and how they pertain to the rehabilitation of persons with disability.

BODY COMPOSITION

Focused on measuring the amount of fat mass an individual has relative to his/her total mass

EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY

Study the acute responses and chronic adaptations to exercise. The equipment in the lab allows for the investigation of a variety of physiological systems and fitness parameters.

NEUROMECHANICS

To better understand, how sensory information is used to guide our actions through the use of sensory probes, electrophysiological recording devices and psychophysics.

NEUROMUSCULAR RESEARCH

Focused on the physiological- and performance-based aspects of neuromuscular function ranging from the characteristics of neuromuscular fatigue to adaptations and beneficial responses of strength training.

PERCEPTION-ACTION

Study how we adapt corrective balance reactions to meet environmental challenges under extreme time pressure.

SENSORY MOTOR BEHAVIOR

Study how we plan for and control movements that occur in sequence..
